Eight centuries by the sea

The location determined Rostock’s beginnings: well-frequented trade routes and a harbour protected from wind and weather inland on the Warnow river were the deciding factors for the settlement, which was granted city rights in 1218. The Hanseatic League soon sought to join forces with other cities and the first university in the eastern region was founded here in 1419. And whenever the free exchange of goods and knowledge was guaranteed, Rostock prospered.

Work, learn and live where others go on holiday

Even without guaranteed sunshine, the region around Rostock is more than just an insider tip for a holiday. As a ferry and cruise harbour, it is not only the tourist heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, but also the economic engine of the state and home port of the German Navy. Around 500,000 people live here. Sandy beaches and cliffs invite you to relax on the beach as well as to experience cycling tours along the coast, windsurfing and kitesurfing. And to the east of Rostock, the forest almost falls into the sea.

Curious about the future

Rostock scores highly with its long tradition as a university location, its numerous renowned cutting-edge research institutions and its close networking in the southern Baltic Sea region. Start-ups, smart ideas and investments have a future here! In the field of research and application, the Ocean Technology Campus is a new cluster for underwater research.

ENITECH SubSea GmbH (or “ENISEA”), which was founded in spring 2016, acquired the marine technology assets of the insolvent ENITECH Energietechnik-Elektronik GmbH (“ENITECH”) in May 2017. By changing our name to Kraken Power GmbH, we joined the innovative team at Kraken Sonar Inc. Canada. The majority of ENITECH’s maritime employees, with their valuable expertise, now work at Kraken Power GmbH.

Our company specialises in the development, manufacture and sale of pressure-neutral drive, power supply and control technology for underwater robots. We also offer our customers advice in the field of pressure-neutral technology, as well as the development and manufacture of pressure-neutral system solutions.

Under the technical leadership of Dr Carl Thiede, we have been working on pressure-neutral technologies and products for the subsea market for a number of years. We are internationally recognised for our specialised deep-sea components and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and cable-guided vehicles (ROVs). Our company’s unique pressure-neutral encapsulation technology enables the propulsion, control and power supply to function to a depth of 6,000 metres without the need for a costly pressurised enclosure. This technology results in solutions that are less expensive, more compact, lighter, safer and less susceptible to underwater corrosion and bio-fouling.

At present, Kraken Power GmbH’s field of activity includes:

  • electronic, mechanical underwater systems up to 6,000 m diving depth
  • electrical underwater drives from 0.1 W to 3.6 kW
  • battery systems, energy supply systems

The IOW’s research activities focus on the Baltic Sea, which, with its limited water exchange due to its close connections to the North Sea and a very large catchment area, is a prime example of a coastal sea under utilisation pressure. At the same time, the broad spectrum of environmental conditions in the Baltic Sea offers researchers at the IOW an ideal setting in which to investigate the most diverse issues of modern marine research – right on our doorstep.

With Biological and Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry and Marine Geology, all four basic disciplines of marine research are represented at the IOW. This enables an interdisciplinary approach.

One of the important cross-sectional tasks of the IOW is the collection of long-term data series in the Baltic Sea. This is carried out both on behalf of the German Federal Government for the Helsinki Commission and as part of the IOW’s own research programme. The Institute prepares annual status assessments on the basis of regular data collection.

The research vessel ELISABETH MANN BORGESE is available to the IOW for its work in the Baltic Sea. In addition, the institute has access to the ships of the German research fleet, such as the FS METEOR or the FS MARIA S. MERIAN. The IOW is also working on the further development of innovative measurement technology. In view of the size of the oceans and the multitude of processes taking place here, measurements can only be incomplete and so one of the challenges of marine research is to obtain as much information as possible from this data. New techniques, methods and evaluation procedures are being developed at the IOW for this purpose.

The IOW in figures

As a member of the Leibniz Association, the IOW receives basic funding from the federal and state governments; in addition, the staff also raise third-party funds. On average, the IOW has a total budget of over 20 million euros per year. Around half of the 220 employees are researchers.

Every human being leaves a footprint on this earth – be it in the form of culture, life, evolutionary progress, pollution or – even worse – war. Over the course of decades, hundreds and thousands of years, these footprints become more and more hidden beneath the surface. But they remain and must be treated carefully – either to protect and learn from history or to protect ourselves by removing the vast amounts of explosive remnants of war.

SENSYS has set itself the task of contributing to this with surveying equipment and solutions for the non-destructive evaluation of surfaces. As a developer and manufacturer, it is our job to research surveying methods and underpin them with hardware and software designed for use in the field. We support those in the field who are committed to improving and protecting us all.

Our pCO2 “underway” measurement technology with LI-COR® analyzers and mBubbler® flat membrane equillibrators are the only high-performance systems without complex reference gases, suitable for maintenance-free long-term use under extreme conditions.
  • Consulting: project management and consulting activities for increasingly complex challenges in global markets are the basis for the success of industrial, public and scientific projects. We provide support and advice from the project idea through the realisation phase to after-sales support and service. A key corporate objective is the development, production and marketing of sustainable technologies for international markets. The company’s high degree of flexibility and the modularity of its products also allow the realisation of unusual technical challenges. Strategic interest is the development of subsea power and monitoring solutions within a powerful consortium for international markets.

The University of Rostock is a comprehensive university and has a total of nine faculties, which are subdivided into numerous institutes and clinics. It is well networked at home and abroad and recently became a full member of the European University Network European University for Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability (EU-CONEXUS).

Academic training related to the sea has a long tradition at the University of Rostock and today takes place, for example, in the Master’s degree programmes in Marine Biology, Aquaculture and Ship and Marine Technology, as well as in research diver training and the OTC Summer School.

In addition, the Interdisciplinary Faculty, as a central academic institution, brings together researchers and students from all disciplines. Research specialisms are brought together here across disciplinary boundaries. The Department of Maritime Systems in particular focuses on analysing the impact of global and regional changes on seas and coastal zones as well as the sustainable use of maritime habitats. To this end, the department pools the scientific expertise, not only of the University of Rostock but also of external partners, in a wide range of disciplines related to the sea, including natural sciences, engineering sciences, environmental sciences as well as social sciences and economics.

Since 2021, the Department of Maritime Systems has been home to the University of Rostock’s research diver training programme and the new research catamaran LIMANDA. With this overall structure, the University of Rostock is in a forward-looking position to develop solutions for urgent issues in the coastal zone and to provide high-quality interdisciplinary training for the next generation of researchers.

The University of Rostock coordinates the research network “Future Cluster OTC Rostock”, which was honoured in the nationwide competition “Clusters4Future” organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in 2021.
